Vaginal discharge

Vaginal discharge is a normal constant presence for women during menstruation. It’s a mucus-like fluid that protects from infection. The discharge may start a month before the first period and stops post-menopause.

 

Is vaginal discharge normal?

Vaginal discharge is nothing to worry about; it can appear at any age. But the amount may vary. The discharge is usually heavy during pregnancy, during birth control, if you are sexually active, or while ovulating (periods). Make sure it:

  • Doesn’t have an unpleasant smell
  • Is white or clear
  • Is sticky and thick
  • Is wet and slippery

 

Vaginal discharge infection

If the vaginal discharge changes in smell, texture, or color, it may indicate an infection. The possible causes of the change are:

  • Bacterial vaginosis
  • Thrush
  • Trichomoniasis
  • Genital herpes
  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea

So, kindly consult a doctor. DO NOT self-diagnose.

Consult a doctor if

  • You vaginal discharge changes in smell, color, or texture
  • You feel sore or itchy
  • Produce more discharge than usual
  • Paining during urination
  • Pelvic pain (between thigh and stomach)
  • Bleed between periods or after sexual intercourse

Should and shouldn’t do things during vaginal discharge

Vaginal discharge is natural, so you can not prevent it. But to avoid irritation, dryness, or soreness:

  • Wash the skin near the vulva gently with normal water

But:

  • Don’t use deodorants or scented wipes
  • Don’t use non-perfumed or perfumes gels or soaps
  • Don’t wash inside the vulva
