Sore or white tongue

Sore or white tongue is a term used to define any area of the tongue that has a grayish-white layer on it. The coating may cover the whole tongue or occur in patches.

A sore or white tongue is not severe and is often effortlessly treated.

Sore or white tongue causes

Biting the tongue or burning it with a hot drink or food cause hurt and swelling. The white language should only last a few days.

A white language can signify an underlying health condition, such as,

  • Lichen planes- lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the mouth and tongue. It involves the lips, the inside of the cheeks, and the gums. Researchers are uncertain what causes it, but it might be due to an immune response or hereditary factors.
  • Leukoplakia- Tobacco and liquor lead to leukoplakia. It results from inflammatory diseases and irritation from dentures.
  • Syphilis- Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection.
  • Mouth ulcers or oral thrush

White tongue is not always possible to avoid. Essential oral hygiene can help prevent many cases;

  • Brush your teeth with a soft toothbrush
  • Brush and regularly maintain your tongue
  • Utilize a straw while drinking
  • Take pain relief medications like paracetamol or ibuprofen
