Gum disease
Gum disease is when the gums inside the mouth turn red, sore, swollen, or bleed. It’s standard but requires an immediate dentist checkup.
Gum disease preventions
The build-up of plaque causes gum disease on the teeth. If you do not brush or clean regularly, the build-up plaque can irritate your gums. Following are the preventions:
- Try brushing with fluoride toothpaste at least two times a week, but spit it, not rinse
- Floss between your teeth every day
- Change to a new toothbrush every 1–3 months
- Consult a dentist for regular checkups, especially if you have type 2 diabetes or you are pregnant
- Do not smoke
- Don’t use mouth wash straight after brushing
Gum disease can lead to
- Bad breath
- Bad taste in the mouth
- Shrinking of gums
- Teeth becoming loose or fall out
Gum disease treatments
The treatment depends on how severe the gum disease is; if you are at the beginning stage, your doctor might advise you:
- Quit smoking
- Teeth cleaning from a hygienist
- To use interdental brushes

If your gum disease is severe, a dentist might suggest:
- Deep cleaning under your gums
- Antibiotics
- Teeth removal
- Surgery for gum
