Enhanced recovery
An evidence-based strategy called enhanced recovery aids patients in recovering more quickly from major surgery. Rapid or accelerated recovery are other names for enhanced recovery.
Although not all hospitals have them, many do and enhanced recovery programs after surgery for many operations.
It seeks to make sure that patients:
- Are in the best health before undergoing treatment
- Receive the finest care possible throughout their procedure
- Receive the highest quality treatment while recovering
A procedure can cause both physical and psychological discomfort. Improved rehabilitation programs work to restore your health as soon as feasible.
Who could gain from improved recovery?
All surgical situations can benefit from some of the enhanced recovery concepts. However, specially created paths enable patients to benefit from the principles more efficiently for some ailments and operations.
The following surgical procedures and medical conditions make use of enhanced recovery programs:
- Breast removed due to breast cancer
- Colorectal, removal of all or part of the intestine or back passage due to bowel cancer
- In gynecology, removing the womb.
- Musculoskeletal, including a knee or hip replacement
- Urology, such as the prostate gland’s removal (prostatectomy) due to prostate cancer

Enhanced recovery program
You must take an active part in your treatment to speed up your recovery following surgery.
Before your procedure, you should carefully examine the following:
- Intake well
- Exercise
- Relax and calm yourself
- Give up smoking and alcohol
In the hospital, your medical staff will recommend how to accelerate your recovery.
The recommendations might comprise the following:
- You might even be walking to the surgical room to maintain your fitness level
- Drinking clear liquids or carb-containing beverages up to two hours before your procedure
- Starting to move around as soon as you can following your surgery
- Eating well after surgery
Techniques that will aid your recovery, such as keyhole surgery, local or regional anesthesia, and using fewer drains and nasogastric tubes, may also be suggested.
You will also have access to recovery options following surgery, including physiotherapy. You will recuperate more quickly, as a result, allowing you to leave the hospital as soon as feasible.
